‘Traces’ explores the emptiness left in two small Senegalese coastal communities, Ndiebene and Pilote-Barre, by those who went missing during their sea journey to Spain in 2006. According to their inhabitants, from these two fishing villages near the Senegalese city of Saint Louis, around 40 people went missing during their trip in canoes to Spain. Despite the risks, over a two-year period, young people continued in their efforts to achieve their dream of reaching Europe, having witnessed the material wealth of those who succeeded and returned before them.

Scenes and objects that represent the few remaining traces left by the missing, are paired together with their portrait and presented as one image, in the form of a photo collage. In this way, the visual essay attempts to capture the feeling of irreplaceable absence left by those who disappeared.
